USD 106 receives Commissioner's Award, other awards, from KSDE

BAZINE & RANSOM- Western Plains USD 106 has been recognized through the Kansas Can Star Recognition Program as a high achieving school district in the state of Kansas. The Kansas Can Star Recognition Program evaluates districts on areas such as "social-emotional growth, kindergarten readiness, Individual Plans of Study (IPS), high school graduation preparedness, high school graduation, civic engagement and postsecondary success" (www.ksde.org).

Every school district in the state serves a slightly different population with different outside influences, such as lower socio-economic standing, chronic absenteeism, mobility,  and ESOL populations.  When these factors are accounted for their is a predictive rate of success.  To be eligible for any of these awards a school district had to meet or exceed what the state average would be for their predicted level of success.  Different levels of success above the state average were designated as Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Copper.

USD 106 has been received three different awards in a possible four different categories with regard to its performance.

Western Plains USD 106 received the Copper Award with regard to its graduation rate (89.9%), and the Bronze Award for Post Secondary Effectiveness which measures the number of students two years after graduating that are continuing in college (49.9%), having graduated with an Associates Degree, or obtained a nationally certified accreditation.  The district also received the Commissioner's Award which is a combination of graduation rate, post-secondary Effectiveness and academic performance.  The only area the district did not receive an award was with regard to academic preparation which is the percentage of students in K-12 in the district that reach the 3rd and 4th levels of performance on the annual state academic assessments.

These recognitions are a great credit to our administration and staff who work hard day in and day out to make our school district one that is progressive, safe, educational, and one that prepares students for success after high school.
